In honor of the upcoming #OhioClassic, we are highlighting a few Central State University and Kentucky State University graduates  who have successfully transitioned from the yard of their university to impactful roles at Nationwide®.

Read below to learn more about how each associate’s HBCU experience has equipped them with the tools to thrive at Nationwide®.

What was the most impactful lesson or experience you had attending KSU?

For me the greatest impact attending Kentucky State University (KSU) is the sense of community and family shared not only amongst students but among the teachers and staff as well.  I vividly remember Dr. Marva Strickland addressing each student as a “scholar.” EVERY TIME we left her classroom, she left us with these parting words, “Remember how wonderful you are.” At 18 years of age, I had no idea the lasting impact that these words would have on me as well as laying the foundation of self-confidence and sense of self. Her words of affirmation will forever live in the hearts of all students that had the distinct honor and pleasure of being her student. HBCUs are known for being supportive of the needs of their students and KSU absolutely did this for me.

How has your HBCU experience propelled you to success at Nationwide?

Our Kentucky State University (KSU) motto is “Onward and Upward.”  From day one, I knew that excellence was not an option, it was an expectation. Perseverance, endurance and excellence are just a few words that come to mind when I think about the tools that I developed during my time at KSU.

The tools and experience I gained from my HBCU experience have prepared me for success at Nationwide. Working for a Fortune 100 company, there is no room for giving anything less than my best every day.

What does it mean to you to work for a company that supports the success of HBCUs and higher education?

Working for a company that supports the success of HBCUs means everything. Attending KSU was hands down one of the best decisions of my life. To work for a company that supports the success of HBCUs s just one more reason that I am a proud Nationwider.

BONUS: What are you most excited to see at the Classic for Columbus?

Without a doubt, the highlight of the game will be the halftime show and watching those Mighty Marching Thorobreds. #KSU4LIFE

What was the most impactful lesson or experience you had attending Central State University?

I had so many that it is hard to narrow it down to just one or a few, but the sense of family would have to be at the top of my list. The relationships with students and faculty have extended well past my college days.

How has your HBCU experience propelled you to success at Nationwide?

My HBCU propelled me to success at Nationwide because of the support I received there.  I experienced a huge sense of family, common bonds, and preparation for the “real world.”  It also increased my passion for STEM and many other things in life.

What does it mean to you to work for a company that supports the success of HBCUs and higher education?

This means a lot! Nationwide is very serious about the inclusion and diversity of the workforce today, tomorrow and in the future!

BONUS: What are you most excited to see at the Classic for Columbus?

Both the game and the band! For a lot of HBCUs, from a band perspective, halftime is known as “game time” due to the highly entertaining and exhilarating performances that many HBCU bands bring, including the IMM (Invincible Marching Marauders) CSU band.  I’m excited to see the football game as well, since CSU football has a new coaching staff that has recruited some great additions to the team’s roster.  I’m also looking forward to CSU football overall, to bring powerhouse football back to CSU as it was back in the early to mid-1990’s.

What was the most impactful lesson or experience you had attending Kentucky State University?

Kentucky State University wanted ALL students to succeed! There were no “weed out” courses or impossible exams with a curve. The professors taught to ensure students learned the material and had hands-on experiences so that we would be successful in the next level of education and/or career.

How has your HBCU experience propelled you to success at Nationwide?

KSU gave me the preparation needed to earn a Master’s degree in Computer Science from the University of Southern California and the technical depth and breadth to do well in technology positions at Nationwide.

What does it mean to you to work for a company that supports the success of HBCUs and higher education?

I’m proud to work for a company that ensures EVERYONE has an opportunity and gives back by providing internships, apprenticeships, and scholarships as well as investing dollars to uplift technology resources for HBCUs!

BONUS: What are you most excited to see at the Classic for Columbus?

Game, band, sanctioned events, etc.:  a KSU win!

What was the most impactful lesson or experience you had attending Central State University?

Being at Central State University (CSU) taught me the ability to balance being a full-time athlete and a full-time student at the same time.

Being a competitive athlete, you’re traveling almost every weekend to compete. Sometimes it’s out of state, or even out of the country. You have to be able to balance the demanding schedule with your studies.

How has your HBCU experience propelled you to success at Nationwide?

I would say CSU taught me how to adapt, learn fast and focus under pressure.

What does it mean to you to work for a company that supports the success of HBCUs and higher education?

Nationwide is focused on diversity and is very inclusive, so having the company supporting the success of HBCU and higher education means a lot to me.

BONUS: What are you most excited to see at the Classic for Columbus?

I’m excited to see everything.
